Older than Doha but far smaller in size, Al Khor is located 57 kms north of the capital city. Famous for its picturesque fishing harbour and port, Al-Khor used to be a major conventional pearl fishing town and is also known for its excellent beaches, a historic tower and interesting mosques.
Continue your tour to Al- Zubarah which is one of the most interesting archaeological sites in the state. The settlement shows evidence of a long-standing and prosperous community. Gradual migration of the tribes caused the abandonment in 1937. Excavations are still ongoing to this date. Artefacts uncovered are on display in the Al Zubarah Fort.
Al-Zubarah fort serves as a pristine example of a typical Arab fort built using the traditional Qatari technique. The Coast Guard used the sturdy fort as a station until the mid 1980s when it was turned into a museum to display findings uncovered in the nearby Al-Zubarah town H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Qassim Al- Thani built the fort in 1938 on the ruins of an older castle that had been destroyed. It houses pottery found in the settlement nearby, ceramics, coins etc.
Depart and drive towards Doha and enroute enjoy your packed snack boxes for a light meal. Arrive at the Umm Salal Mohammed Fort approx 20 kilometres north of the capital. The 19th-century fortress rises four storeys high, with thick sand-coloured walls and an imposing façade topped with typical Arabian crenulations. The two towers make for an excellent photograph. Inside the decorative architectural style is worth a look.
Another attraction located adjacent to the fort is a small mosque; the old minaret restored to its original for stands as a fine example of Arabian architecture.
